Veteran juju musician, Peter Akanni Akorede popularly known as Emperor Pick Peters, has passed away.
Sources say Pick Peters died yesterday after a brief Illness. He was aged 74.
The musician’s death was confirmed by Prince Tayo Adeolokun, chairman, TASMAN Equipment, a top musical equipment hiring company in Nigeria.
Emperor Pick Peters’ name would ring a bell in the ears of juju music lovers of old. Way back in the ‘70s, Pick Peters made waves when he engaged in a rift with top juju musician, King Sunny Ade.
The deceased released an album, Ejuba F’omo Ode (Adore Hunter’s Son), which was considered a response to King Sunny Ade’s song, Ekilo F’omo Ode (Hunter’s Son Be Warned) released on African Songs/TYC Records owned by the late Chief Bolarinwa Abioro. Since then, the nickname, Omo Ode (Hunter’s Son) stuck on him.
Pick Peters was also in contention/rivalry with Admiral Dele Abiodun, another juju music star of that era.
Before his death, Emperor Pick Peters tried to resuscitate his music career. But the move was not successful.
