Two arrested seven months after road crash left Nigerian student dead in Scotland

Two people were arrested and charged in connection with a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a female Nigerian student, Chinenye Vera Okonkwo, in Scotland.

Ms. Okonkwo was struck on St Vincent Street in Glasgow city centre around 7.40pm on Thursday, February 2, 2023. The 33-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 29-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man have now been arrested and released pending further inquiries.

They were reported to the Procurator Fiscal on Tuesday, September 12, charged with traffic road offences. They are due to appear in court at a later date.

The fatal collision sparked a large emergency service response with police officers closing down several adjacent streets.

Chinenye was described as a “wonderful, kind, intelligent young woman” by those who loved and knew her. Her heartbroken family released a touching tribute to their “passionate” loved one and said their lives will “never be the same” without her.

In a statement released via Police Scotland, her family said: “Chinenye was a wonderful, kind, intelligent young woman with a strong faith in God. She had a passion to succeed and whatever obstacles she faced were overcome.

“She was very family-oriented and always had time for everyone. Our lives will never be the same without her.”
