States Assembly Speakers to present constitutional amendment on Thursday

Conference of States’ Houses of Assembly Speakers have written to Nigeria’s National Assembly to present the outcome of the constitutional amendment Thursday.

A letter which was addressed to the Senate and read by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said, the constitutional amendment would be presented by States Houses of Assembly to the joint sitting of Upper and lower chambers at 4.30 pm.

The 8th Assembly began amendment of Nigeria’s 1999 constitution sometime last year with the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu as the committee’s Chairman.

All the 36 states of the federation were expected to make inputs on the proposed clauses(s) to be amended which was in tandem with the processes leading to amendment of the nation’s constitution.

Of interest, however, in the current amendment processes was the local government autonomy proposed by both Chambers of the National Assembly, stating that autonomy of local government council in Nigeria would deepen the nation’s democracy. (Daily Post)
