Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (Great Zik) was born in Zungeru, northern Nigeria in 1904. He travelled to the US in pursuit of education. While there he attended Howard University, Washington DC, before enrolling and graduating from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, in 1930 and 1933 (Wikipedia). He was a journalist and founded West African Pilot newspaper in the 1940s. He was a nationalist and played a big role in obtaining Nigerian independence. As a politician, he became Governor General and in 1963, was the first Nigerian president, a titular position he held till 1966 when the army struck. See some of his other photos here:
