Read this before dating your colleague at work

Relationship

When it comes to dating a coworker, the number one rule that readily comes to the mind is ‘don’t do it‘, but sometimes, that’s easier said than done especially if you are attracted to the person or your job requires you to spend long hours and tight cubicles with the same person.

Tempting as it may be, dating a coworker or boss or colleague can turn out to be super awkward and traumatic. Sometimes it may lead to a tarnished professional reputation, and even job-loss.

However, some people don’t see anything wrong with dating a co-worker. While some people is it as a no-go area, other sets of people see it as a walk in the park.

If you’re considering dating someone you work with, read these tips first because if at all you have to do it, then do it right.

1. Review Your Company’s Policy

If it is strictly against the rules in your company, then think twice before becoming involved with a coworker. There are lots of options out there, and a coworker might be appealing because it seems convenient.  If you try to explore other options, but you and your coworker can’t stop thinking about each other, then speak to your human resource executive to see if there might be a clause for exceptions.

2. Make Sure It’s Worth It

Kissing, smooching and all kinds public display of affection are a huge no-no in the office

It sounds simple enough, it’s important to keep in mind that the person you know at the office is likely different from the person he becomes when he’s not in a professional setting. Ensure he is worth it and that it could become something real.

3. Don’t Engage In PDA At Work

Even if your company policy doesn’t explicitly state anything against engaging in romantic relationships at the office, don’t give your HR executive a reason to keep their eyes on you. No one needs to see your public display of affection.

4. Maintain Independent Friendships And Hobbies

Dating your co-worker and then seeing him after work may be too close for comfort. Try doing your own thing, be independent. Learn a new skill, hangout with your girls, do just anything to maintain your own identity. It’ll keep you sane and even better, the heart grows fonder with a little distance even if it’s just for a few hours. Plus, you’ll have more to talk about over dinner if you actually did things separately that day.

5. Leave Sex Out Of The Relationship

You don’t want everybody knowing about your bedroom secrets so as much as possible, try to avoid sex in the relationship. It will also help you to get back on your toes quickly if eventually, the relationship crashes.

6.  Have An Exit Strategy

Plan an exit strategy. In the eventuality that the relationship may lead to marriage, one of you may be required to leave the job for another place. Discuss the exit plan with each other.
