Power Outage: A Problem that won’t go away in Nigeria

Uncategorized

nepaIn 1999, when Nigeria returned to civilian or democratic rule, General, sorry, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the Nigerian president at that time appointed Chief Bola Ige (now of the blessed memory) as his Minister of Power and energy. Chief Bola Ige, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) promised that within a period of one year in office, there was going to be power stability in Nigeria. Little did he know about the enormity of the problems he was going to confront in that ministry. He didn’t know he was going to work with people who were more enemies than friends. He didn’t know that every person he was going to rely on was a saboteur. He was frustrated until he was moved to the Ministry of Justice as Attorney General and Minister of Justice for the Federation.

Look at this piece of newspaper displayed here. This newspaper that contained this small piece must have been published sometime before 1986, about 30 years ago. It was being promised therein that by 1986, there would be full restoration of power. The heading of that story was “Nepa: no more blackout … 1986 deadline.” Here we are in the year 2014, the power situation in the same Nigeria is worse than it was pre-1986. And that monster has been consuming billions of dollars year in-year out. The question that must be asked is: What is wrong with us – Nigerians?
