A few days ago, a Corps member who was concerned about a 3-year-old girl being battered by her biological parents in Nnewi, Anambra state alerted the social media. According to the corper, the parents of the girl thought she is a witch and beat her almost every day. Not only is she malnourished and skinny from starvation, but also lives in so much fear of her parents.
The girl named Sarah has now been liberated by the Police. According to CEO of Child’s Right and Rehabilitation Network, Mr. Sam Itauma, the Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr. Sam Okaula, has confirmed the rescue of the girl and the arrest of her parents.
The girl is now hospitalized and undergoing intense medical treatment. Okaula revealed that she has mental challenges and this could be one of the reasons the parents subjected her to such horrible treatment. Investigations are currently ongoing on the aspect of abuse on the child.
Thanks goodness that the innocent poor girl was saved in time enough. How an adult, not to even talk of parents, could physically and emotionally abuse a child who cannot defend herself or harm her attackers, is better left to our law enforcement and psychiatrists to figure out, prescribe remedies, and administer justice. For now, Nigerians should rejoice that another innocent life was prevented from being wasted by fetish-believing savages that masqueraded as Christian zealots of accursed parents. The Youth Corps member should be slated for contention for the best Corps’ Award. Nigerians must get involved in preventing child abuse. Kudos to the police too for not ignoring this matter. The Nigeria Police must have come a long way because, in my childhood, they would not have intervened in a matter like this.
