Orji Uzor Kalu reacts as Supreme Court nullifies his 12-year conviction

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu on Tuesday morning returned to the senate to resume as the chamber’s Chief Whip, the position he held before he was sentenced which has now been quashed by the Supreme Court.

The former Abia state governor was given a rousing welcome by his colleagues and staff of the National Assembly who had not seen him for over six months.

Recall that Orji was in December 2019, sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for allegedly defrauding the Abia state government of N7.1 billion while he was in office.

His sentence was nullified by the Supreme court on May 8 on grounds that the presiding judge lacked the judicial power to sentence Kalu at the time. He was released from the Kuje correctional center on June 3.

  1. Putrid! Nigeria is another arena of rotten systems, Can someone tell us what happened to Orji Uzor Kalu and why he went to jail in the first place, If a reliable judicial system convicted him why will an ex-convict be allowed into the senate of a nation? If he did nothing deserving of his incarceration could someone tell Nigerians why he was sent to jail before the supreme court ever listened to his pleading? What a shame, what a people?
