Black Lives Matter protest in Austin turns bloody as one person is shot dead

A Black Lives Matter protest in Austin, Texas, United States turned out bloody as one of the protesters was allegedly shot dead.

The protesters had gathered in downtown Austin in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement when shots rang out Saturday night.

A clip of the scene shared online showed protesters marching through the streets and shouting “Black lives” and waving banners reading “BLM”. Seconds later, five shots are fired and the video loses focus as protesters scream and run for cover.

Police in Texas confirmed a man was shot and killed at 9:52pm. Austin senior Police Officer Katrina Ratcliff said the person who shot and killed the man had fired from inside a vehicle.

Mayor of Austin Steve Adler said that the city is “shaken” after the night of carnage;

“All I know is that someone dying while protesting is horrible.

“Our city is shaken and, like so many in our community, I’m heartbroken and stunned.”

The suspect is reported to have been detained, cooperating and there is no longer a threat to the public.
