Publisher of Sahara Reporters and the convener of #RevolutionNow protests, Mr. Omoyele Sowore has been released from the State Security Service (SSS) detention.
The Federal government of Nigeria, Tuesday afternoon, ordered the SSS to release him and Col. Sambo Dasuki from its custody.
Sowore has been in SSS custody since August 3 this year while Col. Sambo Dasuki has been with the SSS since 2015 despite the court orders granting them bail.
Sowore was charged with “conspiracy to commit treason and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari among other charges.” On September 24, 2019, Sowore was granted bail by the Federal High Court Abuja, on the condition that he surrender his international passport within forty-eight hours. He met all bail conditions, yet the SSS refused to release him. When it temporarily did, less than 24 hours, he was rearrested.
Dasuki, the first person to be incarcerated, was arrested over a multi-billion naira slush funds that emanated from his office as National Security Adviser to former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. The money meant to prosecute the insurgency in the country and equip the military ended up in politicians’ pockets for matters unrelated to security.
There are many ongoing cases against other individuals and corporate entities in Nigeria over the fund.
