Nigeria’s Super Eagles have advanced to the final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast after beating Bafana Bafana of South Africa 4-2 on penalties Wednesday.

In the line-up against South Africa, the head coach, Jose Peseiro, only made one change in the squad that faced Angola, with Osayi-Samuel replacing Zaidu.

Egyptian referee Amin Mohamed Omar officiated the match.

Sequel to a slow first half, the Super Eagles took the lead from the spot when William Troost-Ekong fired home from the spot after Victor Osimhen was brought down.

Super Eagles thought they had doubled the lead in the dying moments of regular time when Osimhen scored what would have been Nigeria’s second goal, but a VAR check not only ruled out the goal but awarded South Africa a penalty after Yusuf fouled Percy Tau inside the box.

The penalty awarded made the scores 1 – 1. The game went to extra time and no goal was scored again after the extra time.

Nigerian goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali became the hero for Nigeria after he saved efforts by Teboho Mokoena and Evidence Makgopa in a 4-2 shoot-out win.
