Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), on Tuesday, fought over the custody of suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria
Currently suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria’s once-powerful central bank chief was charged with illegally owning a shotgun and hundreds of cartridges
Mr. Emefiele denied the charges and was granted bail. He was not charged with any economic crimes.
Part of the order issued by the judge, Justice Nicholas Oweibo, was that Emefiele should be transferred to the facility of the Nigerian Correctional Service at Ikoyi, Lagos, pending perfection of his bail.
Then in dramatic scenes outside the court room, officers of the secret police officially known as the Department of State Services (DSS) beat up prison officials who were preparing to take the banker into custody until his bail was settled.
The DSS managed to whisk away the 61-year-old bank boss – who again finds himself under arrest in spite of the bail granted him.
He was suspended not long after Bola Tinubu used the address at his May inauguration as president to criticise a key policy spearheaded by Mr Emefiele – the redesign of Nigeria’s currency, the naira.
