Nigerian-American woman returns $5,700 found at workplace

A Nigerian-American woman, Victoria Ogunremi, has returned $5,700 she found in the restroom of her workplace in New Jersey, USA.

Her act of honesty has been celebrated as an inspiring example of integrity by Nigerians abroad and others.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, Ogunremi revealed that her decision was driven by empathy for the person who lost the money.

“The thought of the pain or trauma it could cause inspired me,” she said. “I did not hesitate to return it because of my Christian faith and beliefs. Honesty brings peace of mind, and it is a virtue I deeply cherish.”

After finding the money, Ogunremi quickly identified the owner before informing her employer’s management. Her colleagues praised her selfless act, and the management expressed pride in her exemplary behavior.

“The owner was incredibly grateful and showered me with praises,” Ogunremi recounted. “They said only someone with the fear of God could do such a thing.”

Ogunremi attributed her principles to her late father, who instilled in her the importance of moral values.

“He taught us never to take what does not belong to us. These teachings have guided me throughout my life, and I hope to pass them on to my children and grandchildren,” she said.

She emphasized the importance of doing the right thing regardless of circumstances.

“A good name is priceless, and peace of mind is golden. No matter how tough your situation is, always return what is not yours. The rewards of integrity far outweigh any material gain.”

Ogunremi’s act of honesty serves as a shining example of integrity and compassion, highlighting the importance of doing what is right, even when it’s not the easiest path.
