A politician in Enugu State has been accused of sending thugs to brutalise a woman and her family because they refused to sell their only family land to him.
A video shared online shows the victim and male members of her family lying facedown on the floor as thugs flog them mercilessly.
Afterwards, the eldest son of the victimised family was locked up in his house, according to reports.
A photo taken after the flogging shows welts all over the back of the woman who was flogged alongside the male members of her family.
In addition, the lady’s SUV was destroyed by the alleged political thugs.
An X (Twitter) user who shared videos of the assault and vandalism claimed one of the thugs was arrested after the family reported at the police station but Simon Atigwe personally went to the station to bail the thugs.
The victim and her family are reportedly now in hiding due to alleged death threats from Simon Atigwe.
Apart from the videos of the assault, no evidence has been shared to personally and physically link Atigwe to the attacks.
Simon Atigwe is the former member representing Igbo Eze North/Udenu constituency at the National Assembly from 2019 to 2023.
The Nigeria Police Force PRO ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi reacted to the assault.
He wrote: “I have just called Enugu command on this. We will need to find out and take necessary action. We will definitely act on the matter. Thanks.”
