An Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos on Wednesday granted the request of a housewife, Yetunde, to have her 27-year-old marriage to an electrician, Taiwo Salami, dissolved.
The President of the court, Mrs Funmi Adeola, ordered Taiwo to pay his estranged wife N5, 000 as monthly feeding allowance for the six children of the union, and be responsible for other expenses.
“The court has done all within its reach to reconcile the union, but the petitioner insisted on separation.
“I urge both of you to take care of your children; they should not be affected by your separation.
“The payment of the feeding allowances should be made through this honourable court,” she said.
The 46-year-old petitioner who resides at Agunfoye Area of Ikorodu had urged the court to dissolve the union because her husband was too hot-tempered.
Yetunde said that her husband had threatened to stab her with a knife if she attempted to leave him.
“I don’t want to die; I am psychologically down and this man has made me develop high blood pressure.
“His ill-manners led to the removal of my tooth and because of constant fighting, I was forced to run away from our house. I have also lost my teaching job,’’ she said.
The 50-year-old husband had begged the court to reconcile them and protect the union.
“I beg this court and everybody here present to appeal to her; I will always take things easy with her henceforth,” he pleaded. (NAN)
