Remembering Madiba today, I pulled out a photo taken in 1994 of him with my dad, a supporter of South Africa’s Anti-Apartheid Movement. My dad was incarcerated in Nigeria a few months after this and died four years later still in military custody. When President Mandela was conferred with Nigeria’s highest award by President Obasanjo, he dedicated the award to my dad. Considering that President Obasanjo was doing his best to erase my dad’s contributions to Nigeria’s democracy struggle from public memory, Madiba’s gesture was well done indeed. Two good friends who committed their lives to Africa. May we have many more like them.
