Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced the postponement of the launching of its Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), known as eNaira originally planned to be launched on October 1, Nigeria’s independence day.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, September 30, the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN) spokesman, Osita Nwanisobi, explained that the CBN decided to postpone the launch, due to Nigeria’s independence celebration. The statement was titled, “CBN defers eNaira launch to mark Independence Anniversary”

It read in part, “Ahead of the anticipated launch of Nigeria’s Central Bank Digital Currency, known as eNaira, the planned unveiling on October 1, 2021 has now been deferred due to other key activities lined up to commemorate the country’s 61st Independence Anniversary.”

He also assured there was no cause for alarm, as the CBN and other partners were working to make the digital currency efficient for all customers, particularly for those in the rural areas and the unbanked population.
