Lagos Magistrate declines bail application for Yoruba Nation Agitators

A Magistrate court sitting in Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria, has declined bail application for the 49 Yoruba Nation agitators arrested and detained by the Lagos State Police Command.

The defendants were arrested at Ojota, Lagos on July 3, 2021, during a mega rally in support of the actualization of Yoruba Nation and have since been in police custody.

The defendants are Abiodun Taiwo, Adagunodo Babatunde, Oluwafemi Adeleye, Oloye Taiwo, Saheed Kareem, Adebayo Waheed, Akinbode Sunday, Lawal Akeem, Samuel Ire, Ogundile Dare, among others.

The defendants were being detained by an Ex-parte order granted for 21 days which will expire on July 26, 2021.

The Magistrate, Adeola Adedayo, ordered that the case file to be sent to the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice on Monday.

Human Rights lawyers led by Olasupo Ojo Esq, and Oladapo Kayode Esq, had approached the court to seek bail for the arrested agitators. At the hearing on Monday morning, the court declined the bail application and adjourned hearing to July 27, 2021, for a ruling.

The court had on Monday, July 5, 2021 granted the application for an ex-parte order brought before it by the Lagos State Police Command to detain the agitators for 21 days.

Magistrate Adedayo adjourned the bail hearing and arraignment of the defendants to July 27.
