Kano State government on Saturday, October 14, conducted a mass wedding ceremony for 1,800 new couples in Kano State, Nigeria.
Majority of the beneficiaries of the mass wedding ceremony are primarily widows and divorcees.
At the wedding ceremony officiated by Islamic clerics, the state government paid almost N50,000 in dowry on behalf of each groom to their bride.
In his remarks, Governor Abba Yusuf said the beneficiaries of the mass wedding were selected across the 44 Local Government Areas and the 484 wards of the state.
Yusuf said the government took full responsibility of the weddings, which includes dowry payment, provision of furniture, wedding foodstuff and N20,000 grant for the brides to start up small scale businesses at the comfort of their matrimonial houses.
As part of the mass wedding plan, the couples were also given a bed, food, and clothes, with the couple required to repay the gifts to the state government in case of divorce.
The wedding was a top campaign promise for the current governor.
