The Nigerian Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo led six former Heads of state and Vice Presidents’ to show gratitude to God for his goodness over Nigeria at a special Aso Rock thanksgiving service on Sunday, December 4.
The leaders who converged at the Aso Villa Chapel for the Annual Thanksgiving Service were former President Olusegun Obasanjo; former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon; former Head of the Interim Government, Ernest Shonekan; former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme; and former Chiefs of General Staff, Ebitu Ukiwe and Oladipo Diya.
Also present at the service were the Wife of the Vice President, Dolapo Osinbajo and Margaret Shonekan. Others are Federal cabinet ministers, several top government officials and Christian leaders.
Prayers were offered by the leaders and the Aso Villa Chapel congregation for the continued success of President Muhammadu Buhari, and the progress of the entire nation.
One notable absence at the service was immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan who according to the VP had planned to attend only to cancel at the last minute.
It is safer to say that the past presidents/vice presidents, heads of state/deputies who converged for the prayer are the Christians among them since past Nigerian leaders like Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Ibrahim Babangida, Abubakar etc who are Muslim were not present there.
While speaking with reporters Osinbajo said:
“We were also expecting President Jonathan but unfortunately he had to cancel at the last moment. So we are all extremely excited that we are able to bring everyone together to thank God for our nation and to give him thanks for the great future ahead of us.
We are thanking God, it is a wonderful occasion to thank God and that is what we have done here today.”
After the service, the leaders joined the Vice President at his residence for breakfast.
