Former governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, on Thursday, asked the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), what was causing the delay in the persecution of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

On his verified Twitter handle, Fayose wondered why after the Federal Government had expressed its readiness to prosecute Lawal, the EFCC seemed to be dragging its feet.

He asked if the anti-graft agency was waiting for Lawal to travel out of the country, the same way, the former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Amb Ayo Oke and his wife, Folashade, were alleged to have left Nigeria.

Fayose tweeted, “I have two questions for @officialEFCC, this govt said it was ready to try the former SGF, Babachir Lawal, are they waiting to aid him to travel abroad too? If they claimed Ex-NIA boss, Oke and his wife escaped abroad, has the former SGF escaped too?”

Oke and his wife are being prosecuted by the EFCC in connection with recovered $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23,218,000 linked to them.

A judge on Thursday issued a bench warrant for their arrests after the EFCC repeatedly failed to bring them to court, revealing that the duo had travelled out of the country.

Nigerian govt’s readiness to prosecute Lawal was revealed at the same time as Ayo Oke.

In January, EFCC filed 10 charges bordering on fraud allegations against the former SGF at an Abuja High Court.

Mr Babachir Lawal was removed from office after he was indicted by a Senate committee which investigated the management of money meant to assist persons displaced by Boko Haram.
