Suspected hoodlums have attempted to attack the Ikoyi and Kirikiri Correctional Service centres in Lagos state, Nigeria.
The Lagos state police command confirmed the incident but said that security agents are on ground to repel the attacks.
Videos shared online show smoke emanating from areas around the vicinity of the prison facility.
In the same vein, some security operatives have been seen in a viral video shooting at hoodlums who stormed Kirikiri prison to free prisoners.
According to eyewitnesses, the hoodlums came with threats of freeing prisoners. Residents have also confirmed report of shootings in the community, and it was further learnt that naval personnel have been called in to step up security in the area.
In a tweet posted this afternoon, the Nigerian Ministry of Interior said the situation, especially at Ikoyi prison has been brought under control.
“The situation at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre is under control! Armed squad of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Civil Defence, Police and men of the Nigerian Army are providing security at the facility. The Federal Fire Service is dealing with the fire. Ignore rumors of inmate escaping!” the tweet read.
