Reports say it took hours, and the efforts of men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, to save the life of a woman who was trapped under a 40 feet container on Saturday, 8th February 2020 in Iyana Ipaja Bridge in Lagos, Nigeria.
The container fell of the truck onto her leg which got her trapped but fortunately for her, she didn’t lose her own life.
According to online reports, the accident caused great fear and panic for other passers-by and also a traffic jam on the busy road as sympathisers attended to the cry of the woman.
It was learnt that a doctor was hurriedly called to carry out an emergency amputation on the woman’s trapped leg right at the scene before she was able to be freed from beneath the container.
The Director-General of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said: “Upon arrival of LASEMA officials at the accident scene, it was discovered that a 40-feet container had fallen from the bridge at Iyana-Ipaja on an adult female. She, unfortunately, got trapped under the fallen container.
“She was subsequently, extricated from beneath the container by the agency’s rescue team and taken to the hospital by officials of Lagos State Ambulances Service, LASAMBUS, with a severed limb.
“Subsequently, rescue team recovered the container as well as the limb of the victim from under the container.
However, an eyewitness disputed the LASEMA boss’s narration insisting that it was sympathizers who freed the woman from beneath the container, saying that they went to get a doctor, who had to amputate her limb before rushing her to the hospital.
She said: “No LASEMA person was on ground at that time.”
