A High Court of Rivers State, sitting in Port Harcourt and presided over by Justice Augusta Chukwu has sent 12 suspects to the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre.

They are accused of being involved in the killing of a female Police Inspector named Christiana Erekere.

The suspects, including a groom named Efeoghene Uwheraka, were brought before the court by the police on 13 charges, including conspiracy to commit murder.

The incident occurred when the suspects were stopped by the police for a search near Taabaa community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, as they were traveling to Akwa Ibom State for a wedding. A dispute arose when the police questioned the validity of a document as regards one of the vehicles.

During their arraignment, the suspects pleaded not guilty.

Justice Augusta Chukwu presiding over the case denied bail for the defendants and ordered them to be kept in prison until the next hearing scheduled for October 8.

Mercy Nweke, the lead prosecution counsel, emphasized the severity of the case, stating to reporters, “They applied for bail but the court refused bail. You know it is a capital offence and the matter has been adjourned for accelerated hearing. It is a case of murder. They murdered a policewoman inside the police station.”
