The Peterborough MP, Fiona Onasanya, who was charged last year with lying and seeking to pervert the course of justice has been jailed for three months.
The 35-year-old, who went viral when she quoted Big Shaq’s Man’s Not Hot during a speech in Commons debate was sentenced to three months in jail for repeatedly lying to police by blaming someone else for speeding offences committed by her and her brother Festus.
Onasanya was found guilty of lying to investigators after her car was caught doing 41mph in a 30mph zone in July 2017, only weeks after she won her seat. Subsequently, she was kicked out of the Labour Party and has faced repeated calls to quit office since she was found guilty. But she continues to represent her constituents.
She became the first sitting female MP to be jailed today after a judge told her that, despite being a politician, she would be treated the same as anyone else in the country.
Onasanya has said she is challenging her criminal conviction, meaning she is likely to keep her taxpayer-funded salary until the appeal. The trained solicitor will, however, be unable to practise law upon her release except acquitted.
Jailing her today, Mr Justice Stuart-Smith said he had taken into account that the MP suffers from multiple sclerosis and her career was over. (LIB. Photo: PA)
