Former CBN deputy governor, Obadiah Mailafia, dies

Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is dead.⁣

He died at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Sunday morning, September 19. He was 64 years old.

Mailafia hailed from Randa in the Christian-dominated area of Southern Kaduna in Kaduna state.

He started his elementary education at Musha Sudan United Mission School from 1964 to 1969 and proceeded to Mada Hills Secondary School, Akwanga from 1970 to 1974. He was a keen sportsman, debater and scholar; winning the Commissioner of Education’s Award as the most outstanding pupil of the graduating class of 1974.

He later went to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he made a first-class degree in Economics. He also held a Master’s Degree from the same university.

He also went to Oriel College in the United Kingdom as a Foreign and Commonwealth Scholar. In Oriel College, he got a DPhil Certificate in 1995.

He spent the latter part of his years advocating for a solution to the protracted killings in Southern Kaduna, which had been linked to armed herdsmen of Fulani origin.
