A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Nigeria, presided over by Justice Angela Ataluka, has sentenced a former Member of the House of Representatives from Kano State, Farouk Lawan, to seven years imprisonment over a $500,000 bribe collected from billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola.
In file No. FHC/HC/CR/76/2013, a $3 million bribery charge was instituted by the Federal Republic of Nigeria against Farouk Lawan for asking for $3 million and obtaining the sum of $500,000 from Femi Otedola to remove his company from the list of indicted companies before the House of Reps Adhoc committee on fuel subsidy.
Justice Angela Ataluka convicted Lawan on the three-count charge on which he was tried by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The Judge sentenced Lawan to seven years imprisonment in respect of the first two counts and five years on the third.
Justice Ataluka also ordered for restitution of the collected sum of $500,000.
