Ebola Scare: Morocco Withdraws As AFCON 2015 Host

Uncategorized

Morocco, announced on Thursday that they are no longer willing to host the bi-annual AFCON football tournament due to fears of the viral disease Ebola, which has ravaged a number of African nations over the last few months, spreading to their country.

As a result of this, the Confederation of African football (CAF) will have to shop for a new host for the 2015 African Nations Cup. Moroccan government, through the federation, had given CAF three scenarios: to either let them host the 2017 Afcon or CAF to postpone Afcon 2015 to 2016 or Morroco pulling out completely and facing any consequence from CAF.

The continent football governing body, CAF has not responded which led to Moroccan government’s decision to pull out to avoid the risk of Ebola spreading to the North African country. While South Africa is in focus as possible hosts, Sudan is also requesting from CAF to be considered as alternative hosts.

It is not clear yet whether Morocco would be sanctioned by the governing body for the decision it took.
