Driverless cars trialed in DubaiWho needs a driver when you can cruise around Dubai in a driverless car?

The biggest talking point in tech right now is being trialing this week at the second Mena Transport Congress and Exhibition.

The box-like vehicles will run exhibitors between sites on pre-programmed routes, carrying up to 10 passengers at one time.

Built around a high-tech sensor system, the cars are fitted with a number of safety features in line with traditional automobiles.

Should the trial prove successful, it is anticipated the vehicles could be rolled out in major tourism hotspots around Dubai to help ease congestion, as well as at the Expo 2020 site. Their arrival is in line with the emirate’s move to becoming a Smart City.

The vehicles, named EZ10, have been created by EasyMile, a French company and joint venture between Ligier Group and Robosoft.

Already a major feature of the Masdar City development in Abu Dhabi, driverless cars are at the forefront of the tech world’s developmental programme. Only today, Elon Musk’s Tesla claimed he had created an autopilot that slashes crashing rates by half (check out the video below).

“The probability of having an accident is 50% lower if you have Autopilot on,” he told a conference in Norway. “Even with our first version.

“So we can see basically what’s the average number of kilometers to an accident – accident defined by airbag deployment. Even with this early version, it’s almost twice as good as a person.”
