To officially recognise June 12, 1993, the day Nigerians put ethnic bigotry aside and voted MKO Abiola, a Yorubaman as Nigerian president across all geo-political zones, Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari has thus declared June 12 date as democracy day. 

Today is the first official celebration of the day having declared it as public holiday. Much has been said before about events leading to this celebration.
