DCP Abba Kyari, 6 others arraigned in court for drug trafficking

Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, has been arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) before a Federal High Court (FHC), sitting in Abuja, Nigeria, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite on Monday.

In the charge marked FHC/ABJ/57/2022, Kyari was arraigned alongside six others on eight counts bordering on drug trafficking.

The defendants include four members of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IGP-IRT), and they are ACP Sunday J. Ubia, ASP Bawa James, Insp. Simon Agirigba and Insp. John Nuhu.

Other defendants are two alleged drug traffickers that were arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu; Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne.

A mild drama however ensued at the Court, when two co-defendants of the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, pleaded guilty to part (5th, 6th and 7th count) of the hard drug trafficking charge filed against them.

Kyari and four other defendants, who are Police officers pleaded not guilty to the entire eight-count charge.

Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned till next Monday to hear the bail application of the defendants and ordered that they, including those who pleaded guilty, be remanded in the custody of the NDLEA.
