Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has thrown its weight behind a suggestion by former governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha that Nigeria should adopt a reduced Parliamentary representation from each state of the federation as part of efforts to decrease government’s running costs.

Reacting to the proposed reduction of the numbers of legislative representatives from states at the National Assembly, the CNPP noted that, “Senator Okorocha was telling nothing but the truth when he canvassed that one Senator is enough to represent a state at the legislative chamber.

“Like Senator Okorocha said, what is too sacrosanct that Senators and House of Representatives members were doing that only a senator per state could not do?

“We, therefore, urge Senator Okorocha to urgently sponsor a Bill for the amendment of relevant sections of the constitution in line with his thoughts to conserve funds for capital projects to the benefit of poor Nigerians”, the CNPP counselled.

  1. To support my above point of reducing the number of legislators and curb massive and enormous spending in Nigeria, take a look at Italy…They have just reduced the number of their parliamentarians from over 900 members to 600. The country will be saving a lot of Lira each year. Nigeria should learn and adopt the same standard!

  2. One cannot help but be glad that some people are thinking of ways Nigeria can reduce their excessive and enormous spending on legislators…even though it’s coming from the wrong messengers.

Former governor Okorocha’s suggestion is simply a template of issues to be looked at if indeed Nigeria wants to curb it spending on legislators.

Another suggestion! We can start with reducing the number of constituencies, both in the state and federal. Also, and this is where it’s going to affect and hurt Governor Okorocha, reduce the number of senators from 3 per state to 2 per state, therefore, reducing the number of senators from 95 to 72. Since the senate is the body that costs Nigeria the most amount of money, we’d be saving a tremendous amount of money. With the dislike that Governor Okorocha suffers from his state, we don’t have to deal with him any longer. Just a thought!
