Nigerian ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has emerged victorious in the recently concluded Edo State governorship election.
Okpebholo emerged victorious over his main challengers, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).
The gubernatorial election Returning Officer for the state, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, announced Okpebholo as the winner at the collation centre in Benin City, the state capital, on Sunday.
The APC candidate secured 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes. Akpata of the LP finished a distant third with 22,763 votes.
A breakdown of the results showed that Okpebholo won in Esan West, Owan West, Egor, Akoko-Edo, Esan Central, Orhionmwon, Owan East, Etsako Central, Etsako West, Etsako East amd Oredo.
Ighodalo won in Igueben, Uhunmwonde, Esan South East, Esan North East, Ovia North East, Ovia South West and Ikpoba Okha.
The candidate of the Labour Party candidate, Olumide Akpata, who polled 22,763 votes, did not win any of the 18 local government areas of the state.
Prof. Kuta, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, declared: “That Okpebholo, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”
