Former police officer, Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 22 years 6 months in prison in the killing of George Floyd, a black man.

The judge said Derek Chauvin’s sentence was based “on your abuse of a position of trust and authority, and also the particular cruelty shown” to Mr Floyd.

Mr. Floyd, 48, died after Chauvin knelt on his neck for nine minutes while handcuffed to his back.

Prosecutors say 30 years would more “properly account for the profound impact of defendant’s conduct on the victim, the victim’s family and the community.”

Chauvin was convicted April 20 of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Floyd’s death, captured on cellphone video by a bystander, inspired global protests against institutional racism and police practices, particularly in the United States.
