Female Nigerian Senator dies, aged 63

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator, Dr. Rose Okoji Oko who represents the Cross Rivers North Senatorial District has died, aged 63.

According to family sources, she died last night at a UK medical facility.

Until her death, she was a second term member of the Red Chamber of Nigerian National Assembly and the serving chairman, Senate Committee on Trade and Investment.

Born on September 27, 1956, late Senator Oko was a member of the Federal House of Representatives from the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), representing Yala/Ogoja Federal Constituency in Nigeria’s 7th session of the National Assembly.

She earned a B.A. and an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Calabar and has a Doctorate in Linguistics from the University of Port Harcourt.

She was always in public service, first as a lecturer in the department of Language and Linguistics in the University of Calabar and then as a public servant when she was appointed as the Commissioner of Education in Cross River State from 1989 to 1992.

She was elected into office as the first female representative from her constituency in June 2011 and sat as Deputy Chairman House Committee on Education.

Oko is the current Senator representing the people of Cross River North Senatorial District. She was elected into office as the first female representative from her Senatorial District in June 2015. And re-elected in 2019.
