Soyinka hails SW governors for ‘Operation Amotekun’

Renowned poet, Playwright and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has hailed governors of the Southwest for initiating and launching the security outfit code-named, ‘Operation Amotekun.’

Soyinka, while describing the security outfit inaugurated last week as “a desirable New Year gift,” said, it’s one of the most unexpected because he had earlier given up on the political leadership of the region until the launch of the security outfit.

The respected playwright spoke on Monday in Lagos at the “Never Again Conference” organised by the Nzuko Umunna and Ndigbo, to mark the 50 years after the Nigerian civil war.

Soyinka said that the governors should be commended for listening to the yearnings of the people.

Operation Amotekun was launched in Ibadan, Oyo State on Thursday — and according to the governors, the initiative which was put together by governors of the south-west as a means to tackle issues of insecurity in the region.
