According to Elombah, the Chadian ground troops on Tuesday crossed into Nigeria for the first time as part of an ongoing offensive against Boko Haram Islamists, an AFP correspondent saw.
Armoured vehicles and infantry crossed a bridge that links the Cameroonian town of Fotokol with Nigerian town of Gamboru, which has been taken back over the weekend from the jihadists who occupied it for several months, according to Nigerian national information spokesman Mike Omeri.
Up till now, the Chadian military had conducted air strikes against the militants.
Elombah.com had reported earlier that rather than its usual characteristic approach of defensive warfare which involves repelling insurgents offensive, Nigerian military has finally launched an elimination onslaught of notorious Boko Haram hideouts including it Sambisa forest headquarters.
According to Elombah, this was contained in a report aired by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa service.
The director of defence information, Maj-Gen Chris Olukolade, confirmed to the agency that the military had indeed been raiding the forest and other hideouts of the sect since Monday night.
According to the agency, the army used its war drones to level some of the Boko Haram camps in the northeast but it was not clear about the casualties on both sides. The army said that they are still committed to securing the civilian population at whatever cost. (Photo credit: Elombah)
