Heavily armed gunmen have invaded the home of Lagos State’s Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s mother, the residence of Madam Christianah Ambode.
According to security sources, the gunmen invaded the octogenarian’s residence at 24 Oguntona Crescent, Gbagada Estate I, Lagos, around 7:30pm on Friday, June 3, 2016 and disarmed her police detail in an apparent kidnapping attempt.
According to neighbours the police officers guarding Madam Ambode’s residence were overpowered and disarmed by the bandits.
The kidnapping attempt was, however, foiled by the swift arrival of a crack team of ‘rapid response squad’. The assailants fled the scene before they could achieve their aim as the response team of police reinforcement arrived at 8.10pm.
However, a top government official who works closely with Governor Ambode denies the attack to Premium Times saying there was “a commotion” near Madam Ambode’s home.
“We heard from the governor’s security that the matter was not about kidnapping,” the source spoke anonymously to Premium Times. “What happened was that a man parked his vehicle outside the home of the governor’s mother and the policemen there asked him to take his vehicle away.
“He then went to call men of Operation Mesa to deal with the policemen, that was what caused the disturbance,” the official said.
Spokesperson for Lagos police, Ms. Dolapo Badmus, when contacted, could not immediately confirm the attack.
