The Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets earlier today made history in Chile, by being the first team ever, to win the FIFA Under-17 World Cup five times. This also made President Buhari a very lucky man because he was the Head of State when Nigeria won the first edition of the tournament in 1985.
The first half ended nil-nil, after Osinachi Ebere failed to put Nigeria ahead when his fourth minute’s penalty was saved by Mali’s goalkeeper Samuel Diarra, and his rebound hit the crossbar. That opportunity came after the ball was handled inside the vital area by a Malian player and the referee did not hesitate to give a penalty kick to the Eaglets.
The two quick goals in the early part of the second half were all it took for Nigeria to beat the African champions, Mali at the Estadio SausalitoVina Del Mar to draw the curtain on the tournament..
The Golden Eaglets, no doubt proved their superiority from the start and tournament’s hot shot, Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 56th minute to take his goal haul to 10 to become the highest goals scorer in the history of the championship.
Three minutes later, a rampaging Bamgboye made Nigeria’s goals two. and all efforts by the Malians to find the Nigerian net did not materialize till the final whistle.
In the losers match played earlier, Belgium defeated Mexico 3-2 to win the bronze. Congratulations to Nigeria.
