A two-story building has collapsed at Saints Academy, a primary and secondary school at Busa-Buji community, Jos North Local government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria, resulting in 22 fatalities and 132 injuries of whom many are still in the hospital.
The incident occurred around 8:30 am on Friday during a third-term examination, trapping students, teachers, and others.
State Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms confirmed the casualties and stated that the injured were receiving medical attention in tertiary health facilities, while the deceased had been taken to mortuaries.
Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang expressed his condolences, describing the tragedy as a “monumental loss” and a “heartbreaking” incident.
He commended the swift response of the search-and-rescue team and the public for their assistance in evacuating survivors.
The governor’s statement, issued through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr. Gyang Bere, acknowledged the devastating impact on the affected families and praised the timely intervention of responders.
