2015 Elections: Underage voting with impunity in Northern Nigeria

Uncategorized

underage accreJega has questions to answer and one of which has raised a big question mark on the credibility of the ongoing polls across the country as minors are seen taking part in the ongoing elections in the North.

This photo that went viral on Social Media shows a minor not more than eight years old keenly accredited by an INEC official in the Northern part of the country.

Report has it that the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is forcing the INEC officials to accredit minors, in order to secure victory in the North.

According to the 1999 constitution as amended, A person shall be qualified to be registered as a voter if he/she: is a citizen of Nigeria, has attained the age of eighteen (18)  years, is ordinarily resident, work in, originate from the LGA, council, ward covered by the registration centre,  presents himself to the registration officers of the Commission for registration as a voter, is not subject to any incapacity to vote under any law in Nigeria.

The fact that minors who are not up to the legal voting age of 18 are casting their votes with impunity undermines the credibility of the polls.

An obviously angry source said, “How credible will this election be? This is unacceptable. This must have been the reason why Jega stated that North had collected 98% of PVCs.”
