Two Supreme Court Justices, who were among some judiciary officers recently arrested by the Department of State Services [DSS] on corruption allegations, have withdrawn from participating in court proceedings.
The two affected Justices, Sylva Ngwuta and Inyang Okoro, will no longer preside over proceedings until they clear themselves of the corruption allegations.
Elombah.com gathered that both Supreme Court Justices had not been sitting since they were released after their arrest
The Justices had been arrested between October 7 and 8 along with some other serving and retired judges.
The outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, was said to have disclosed this after a meeting he held with a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association [NBA].
A source, who attended the meeting, told Punch that the CJN ruled out the call for the suspension of the two justices of the apex court or any of the other arrested judges.
The CJN was said to have told the NBA delegation that the affected Justices of the Supreme Court had, on their own, decided to withdraw from further sittings of the apex court.
NBA had called for the immediate suspension of seven judges arrested by the State Security Service on October 8.
The President of the NBA, Abubakar Mahmud, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, made the call at a valedictory court session in honour of a retiring Justice of the Court of Appeal, Sotonye Denton-West.
