Former Nigerian Senate President, Mr. David Mark, has been declared winner of yesterday’s re-run election in Benue South Senatorial District of Benue State.
Mark was declared winner of the closely contested election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reports from the area said.
Earlier reports had indicated that Mark, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), took an initial wide lead but that his main rival, Comrade Daniel Onjeh of the All Progressives Congress (APC), later started closing the gap to make it a close race.
Collation of results is in progress in six other states of the federation where INEC also conducted re-run State and National Assembly elections yesterday. The affected states are Kaduna, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi and Taraba.
Elections in Langtang South, Plateau State, were cancelled for security reasons while that of Imo has been postponed indefinitely owing to violent protest.
The re-run elections were ordered by the Appeal Court in close to twenty constituencies of the seven states after voiding the results of the April 11, 2015 ballot in the affected areas.
